How to get residency for an infant in the UAE - Makebiz

Becoming parents is one of the most beautiful events in life. And when it takes place in such a wonderful country as the United Arab Emirates, it takes on even more colour. However, as with any new milestone, the residency process for a newborn can be questionable and seem confusing.

With the right information and a clear plan, the process will become simple and straightforward. Below is a step-by-step breakdown of the steps to follow.

1. Obtaining a birth certificate.

Whether your baby is born in a public or private hospital in the UAE, you will receive a birth certificate in Arabic. This is the document that is the basis for all subsequent actions.

The certificate must be certified by the Ministry of Health and Preventive Medicine (MOHAP). This procedure confirms the authenticity of the document and allows it to be used for further official actions.

2. Birth Certificate Translation.

If your birth certificate is only in Arabic, it must be translated into English. Remember that the translation must be done by a certified translator accredited in the UAE. A list of accredited translators can be found on the official website of the Ministry of Justice.

3. Obtaining a passport for the newborn.

For this you need to apply to the consulate/embassy of your country in the Emirates.

List of documents to be prepared:

  • Certified birth certificate of the child.
  • Photographs of the child (check with the consulate/embassy for specific photo requirements).
  • Parents’ visas.

4. Issue a resident visa for the child and obtain an ID.

To do this, you will need to fill out a Resident Visa Application Form and provide all required documents including:

  • Certified birth certificate.
  • Passport of the newborn.
  • Proof of housing in the Emirates (e.g. rental agreement).
  • Parental income certificates (proof of sufficient income to support the child).
  • Medical insurance for the baby.

Application processing times can vary depending on various factors, so we recommend that you apply early to avoid delays. Please contact specialised UAE immigration agencies who can provide you with professional assistance with the paperwork.
