Violations are punishable by a fine and, in some cases, imprisonment for up to 7 years.

The UAE also has Law No. 5 (2012) on Cybercrime, which aims to protect the personal information of every individual and prevent abuse in the digital space. Article 21 prohibits taking photos of people without consent and publishing them in the public domain. Violations are punishable by a large fine of up to AED 500 thousand or imprisonment.

In addition, in all Emirates it is forbidden to take photos of strategically significant and governmental objects.

If there is a necessary justification for this, it is necessary to obtain permission to photograph or videotape the object of interest, otherwise penalties will also follow. There is a known case when tourists took photos of airplanes at the airport of Fujairah Emirate and were arrested by the police, spending two months in custody.
