When visiting the United Arab Emirates as a tourist or relocating for permanent residence, it is worth calculating your spending on food in advance. It’s important to realise that most food is sourced from other countries, so prices may be higher than you expect. 

In the UAE, you can choose dishes inspired by a variety of cuisines, from traditional Arabic cuisine to international cultures. You don’t have to worry about the safety and quality of the food: the municipality pays special attention to maintaining food hygiene in the places where it is made and stored. 

Bargain prices can be found in supermarkets that source produce from local farmers. For example, Coop Union, Carrefour, Safest Way, Lulu Hypermarket. Tourists also love the atmosphere of local markets, thanks to the wide selection, the opportunity to bargain and feel the oriental flavour. 

Let’s go through the main product categories with the average cost in dirhams (AED).

1. Dairy products.

A litre of milk will cost you about AED 6.8, 150g of cheese — 15. Eggs are more commonly sold in packs of 15 and cost around AED 18.

2. Meat and fish.

500g of chicken fillet or beef — 25 dirhams, fish (e.g. dorado) — 20. 

3. Fruits and vegetables.

Let’s take an average calculation of 500 gr. Then the price of apples — 4 dirhams, bananas — 3, oranges — 2. As for vegetables: tomatoes — 2.5, potatoes — 4.5, cucumbers — 2.

4. Sausage products.

Chicken sausage can cost 16 dirhams, and meat sausage already about 30. 

5. Groceries.

400 gr. of rice — 3 dirhams, buckwheat — 11, pasta — 3.70.  

6. Drinks. 

A 1.5 litre bottle of water, depending on the brand, is about 2 dirhams, and juice is 10. A 200 gram can of coffee is 30, and tea for 100 bags is 18. 

7. Canned food.

Corn 180 grams — 3 dirhams, olives 250 gr. — 10, olives — 7. 

8. Sweets.

A variety of biscuits, on the average for a package — 6 dirhams. Dark chocolate in a bar 200 grams — 10, a pack of Raffaello — 23, bars like Snickers — 3. 

9. Crisps.

A pack of Pringles 200 grams — 14.50, Lay’s 170 gr. — 7,15.

10. Bakery products.

A loaf of white bread — 3, baguette — 2,75, croissants in a pack of 5 pcs. — 13,50.

Pay attention to the promotional offers of shops, they can be found in any category. Remember that the cost of food in Dubai can vary greatly depending on the place and preferred cuisine.
