How to check your Emirates ID status and make sure it is valid - Makebiz

Emirates ID is a mandatory document for both locals and residents of the United Arab Emirates. It serves as proof of identity and legal residence in the region. The card’s 15-digit ID number contains important information that applies only to you and will belong to you for life. It is important to track the status of the application or expiry date to ensure timely updates.

The ID card allows you to fulfil many functions:

  • The primary role of the ID is to serve as legal proof of legal stay in the Emirates.
  • Access to government and medical services, emergency services.
  • Ability to vote in elections to the Federal National Council.
  • Financial transactions: opening bank accounts, making payments and applying for loans.
  • The identifier is required for employment records, legal transactions and processes.

Failure to have a valid Emirates ID card may result in fines, restricted access to services and difficulties in official and legal procedures.

The ID card contains personal details such as full name, nationality, date of birth and photograph. It also contains advanced electronic features such as biometrics and digital signature. The ID is equipped with an electronic chip that stores personal data securely.

To check the status of your Emirates ID card, you need to go to the Dubai Department website and enter your application number (PRAN) or ID number (for renewal/replacement applications).

It may take 7-10 days after you apply for your local ID card. During this time it is just about time to keep an eye on status updates.

Renewal can be initiated six months prior to expiry. However, once your ID expires, the government offers a 30-day grace period for renewal. After 30 days, a late renewal penalty of UAE Dhs20 per day will apply (maximum penalty is UAE Dhs1,000). You can check for fines on the Abu Dhabi Police website under government services.

Keep in mind that you can only apply for an Emirates extension once you have renewed or reissued their resident visa. It’s important to renew your ID before it expires, so tracking your status or signing up for alerts will help save you the hassle.
